A Minute With Moana

Friday, October 17th, 2014

We spend a couple of minutes with Moana and find out what’s new…

Describe your music in five words or less.
Eerie fierce ritualistic rock weirdness.

What’s going on in the world of Moana?
In celebration of our debut EP and recent video/single ‘The Killer, My Girl’ we’ll be hitting Melbourne and Sydney in a few weeks for our very first tour! We’re also currently in the midst of dying many fake flowers and sewing gothic queen capes for our next film clip, which we’ll release before the end of the year. Heading into Debaser Studios with Andy Lawson soon to record a couple of new singles, which we shall release next year to much excitement and we’ve got some awesome shows to play as summer emerges. Other than that we’re writing some badass new tunes, jamming, experimenting with our sound, forever seeking stage get-ups, enjoying every moment.

What motivates you to make music?
The compulsion to create is a mysterious beast that lives so deep inside it’s hard to imagine existing without it…

What have been the high and low points of your musical experiences so far?
Highs — live euphoria, In The Pines, EP, ‘The Killer, My Girl’ clip.
Lows — bad leads, bleeding nails, wardrobe malfunctions, ciggie brain.

What music are you listening to at the moment?
Heaps of feel-good 60s/70s stuff like Fleetwood Mac, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix. Must be the spring season in the air.

If you were stranded on a desert island, which member of the band would get eaten first?
Maybe Javan… his mischievous pixie ways would probably lead him into trouble first. But then Lochy looks the tastiest and is most likely to believe any crazy scheme Javan and Moana tell him… But really they would probably both team up against Moana because her witchy ways are too intimidating and scary for deserted islands.

Here’s an opportunity to bitch about something, whether music related or not. What really pisses you off?
Heaps of stuff!! I like a good fight. But pretty much anything to do with government vs the environment, animal cruelty, war and the mining industry get me going like a mad woman. I know we’re all just lost children in a big scary world, but sometimes us humans are real fucking cunts to all the gifts we have been given.

You’re putting together your perfect gig featuring Australian artists. Who would you get to play and where? Feel FREE to include acts/DJs/bands/venues that no longer exist.
It’d be a secret gig only spread by word of mouth. People dressed as magical creatures would guide you to a secret cave in the middle of the Bornaup Forest down south and on the line-up would be (and I’m being quite picky here, because I can) Nick Cave — and it would be during the years where he went out with PJ Harvey so she would want to come play a few songs too, obviously. Silverchair — but they have to be between the Frogstomp, Freak Show and Neon Ballroom eras. Sarah Blasko — for Lochy to marry. Wolfmother — first album era. Plus Perth legends The Growl and Abbe May. Bon Scott would also be there, maybe as the MC.

Moana will be touring the east coast of Australia on the following dates:

October 24 — The Espy, Melbourne
October 25 — Public Bar, Melbourne
October 26 — John Curtin, Melbourne
October 28 — The Old Bar, Melbourne
November 1 — Captain Cook Hotel, Sydney
November 2 — Cafe Lounge Bar, Sydney
November 3 — Balcony TV, Sydney

Live Review: The Dead Kennedys at Capitol

Antennas to Heaven: Katie Gately

Monday, October 13th, 2014

Your weekly submersion into new and experimental music.

For precisely thirteen minutes and forty-eight seconds, ‘Pipes’ — the one and only song on this limited release cassette — opens fire and doesn’t withhold until the its final second, a surprising entrapment considering the intangible nature of the music.

Deep vibrational hums, layered over snapshots of Katie Gately’s, voice are soon betrayed when the heavenly gospel becomes less spiritual and more hellishly psychotic, as the beats begin to skitter and fragment into a cacophony of different noises you could spend hours trying to single out.

For all its wayward directions there’s always something to admire in the craziness of ‘Pipes’: the deranged chanted build ups that ecstatically heighten senses of unease, only to calm with dreamy synth and a flatbed of velvet-soft vocals. This is undeniably complex music, procured with the deftest of hands.

Two Minutes With Lo!

Friday, October 10th, 2014

We spend a couple of minutes with Adrian Shapiro of Lo! ahead of their support slot for Torche in Sydney and find out what’s new…

What’s going on in the world of Lo!?
We’ve just finished recording a new EP called The Tongueless which we will be releasing here and overseas in late November. We’ve been a bit quiet on the gig front after a large tour cancellation mid year, so we’re pretty psyched for this upcoming Torche show!

What motivates you to make music?
Personally I get a lot out of the cathartic nature of heavy music. Loud music, intense playing, screaming. All powerful releases for the body. Besides the internal personal reasons I love touring to new places and meeting great people.

What have been the high and low points of your musical experiences so far??
The greatest high to date would be the 25 date European tour we did with Cult of Luna and The Ocean. Playing that often on a run of shows in a different city every night was incredible and getting to not only attend but play Roadburn Festival in Holland was a dream come true. Exhausting but incredible.

Low point would be some of the harrowing drives we had to do on that tour with minimal sleep and tough time lines. One particular one was a 14 hour drive between two cities in Romania that really should have taken 8 hours except there were three head on collisions and four over turned trucks on the very dubious road. It was a drive of constant fear.

What music are you listening to at the moment?
I’ve got a two and a half year old so I’m currently listening to a lot of the soundtrack to the movie Frozen. Besides that, I’ve been listening to a lot of Baptists, Pig Destroyer and Nails at the moment. Helps the day speed past.

If you were stranded on a desert island, which member of the band would get eaten first?
I’d say most likely Carl. He is the smallest and weakest of us all, but he has strong calves so I think his meat would probably be quite flavorsome.

Here’s an opportunity to bitch about something, whether music related or not. What really pisses you off?
Dickheads in bands. They’re out there. Self-righteous, self-entitled, brats. Just relax and have a good time. Just because you don’t like a type of music that another band is playing or they’re not wearing their socks at the right height or some other crucial element of their band attire. Remember to breathe dudes!

You’re putting together your perfect gig featuring Australian artists. Who would you get to play and where? Feel free to include acts/DJs/bands/venues that no longer exist.
Mindsnare, Midnight Oil, MYC , The Birthday Party and Lo! at The Annandale.

Lo! join Sumeru in supporting Torche on Sunday October 19 at The Oxford Art Factory in Sydney. Tickets on sale now through life is noise.

Anger Management: Shanghai

Wednesday, October 8th, 2014

Every fortnight, we check in with all things heavy on RTRFM’s Critical Mass show.

Led by the very talented Luis Rojas, the nine-headed NSW collective Shanghai release their brand new single ‘Caveat Emptor’.

Announcing its arrival via a dramatic horn blast before kicking into a fast, thrashy riff, it’s clear that this band has brought a huge dollop of cinematic edge to their sound. Their previous release, The Battle for Mount Analogue, featured reinterpretations of some classic film scores/songs, and now band have woven this dramatic flair into their Trey Spruance-influenced sound.

But where bands like Secret Chiefs 3 would meander, Shanghai condense their sound and wrap it in a catchy packaging that even plays its own intermission. Fun stuff — look forward to the upcoming full length.

Critical Mass airs every Wednesday from 9PM on RTR FM 92.1.

Craig’s List: Stillhead

Tuesday, October 7th, 2014

Every fortnight, RTRFM’s Craig Hollywood will bring us a little taste of what to expect from Tuesday’s Full Frequency…

Deep, electronic music. The hazy, blurred overlap between techno and ambient, the dubbed out fringes of house and melancholy bass or the closing gap which separates d&b from dub-techno, it’s all within our Brightest Dark Place. A state of mind. A gut feeling. A reactionary state. Everyone has their own Brightest Dark Place. Join UK artist Stillhead in his.

It has been a year of change for Alex Cowles. After retiring his DFRNT alias, alongside his Echodub label, he has made a fresh start with something new. Working under the alias Stillhead, he has launched a new label: Brightest Dark Place, and arriving with it, the Dwelling EP.

This is a must for any fan of ambient, dub techno or all round high grade electronica.

The Dwelling EP will be release on Brightest Dark Place on December 1.

Full Frequency with Craig Hollywood airs every Tuesday from 3PM on RTRFM.
