Anger Management: Like Father, Like Sons

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

We check in with all things heavy on RTRFM’s Critical Mass show.

Metal legend Steve ‘Zetro’ Souza has been toxic waltzing through various thrash mobs in his 30-year career, most notably Exodus, Tenet and Dublin Death Patrol. Lately Souza’s been lending his ear-piercing vocals to contemporary thrash band Hatriot, whose 2013 album Heroes of Origin could comfortably sit on the shelf with any of his previous career highlights. It features modern razor-sharp riffs, a tight bottom end and Souza’s trademark prickly, aggressive vocals.

Hatriot also sees Souza join none other than his two sons Cody and Nick on bass and drums respectively. I’m sure having your famous father singing for your band won’t hurt album sales at all.

This wouldn’t be the first time a rock/metal band has common bloodlines. Others who have been known to keep it in the family include Pantera (“Dimebag” Darrell and Vinnie Paul Abbott), Sepultura (Max and Igor Cavalera), Gojira (Joe and Mario Duplantier) and AC/DC (Angus and Malcom Young).

Souza performed vocals on no less than five Exodus albums, on and off between 1987 and 2004 (Pleasures of the Flesh, Fabulous Disaster, Impact Is Imminent, Force of Habit and Tempo of the Damned). More recently he has performed on Tenet’s only album, Sovereign (featuring members of Strapping Young Lad) as well as Dublin Death Patrol (featuring Chuck Billy of Testament).
