XPRESSIONS

I have always been greatly affected by Anzac Day. Many of my definitive childhood memories are the annual Anzac dawn services – the sonorous cry of the bugle, and the gun barrel smell of rum on the breath of sad looking men. Having visited the shores of Gallipoli – the very epicentre of the Anzac tradition – I recall the overwhelming sense of pathos while walking amidst the graves of slain countrymen; many of them still boys, interred on a pebbled shore so very far from home.

BON FIRE

Perth has inspired many a soul. And it appears Justin Vernon – aka Bon Iver – wasn’t immune to our fair city’s charms when he last visited in 2009; penning a song entitled Perth, which will be the very first on his new self-titled album, to be released June 17. Featuring 10 new songs penned by Vernon, the album expands Bon Iver’s sonic palette beyond the rustic acoustics of the debut into a lush landscape of silky electric guitars, beautifully intricate keys and subtle horn and string sections while keeping the ghost choirs and densely layered vocals intact that Bon Iver has become so known for.

The award-winning singer has recorded three albums under her own name as well as albums with Andrea Keller and Barney McAll and is a regular performer at Australia’s top jazz festivals and clubs.
