JOIN THE CLAN

If the names Method Man, Ghostface Killah or Ol’ Dirty Bastard mean anything to you, you’re probably a fan of the Wu-Tang Clan. You already know that they’re one of the most influential hip hop groups of all time. And you already know that they’re multi platinum selling artists. But you might not know that in their upcoming Perth show you’ll have the chance to see all of the original members (minus RZA, who’s unable to tour, and Ol’ Dirty Bastard, for obvious reasons) performing together.

SAMIYAM TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM

Hip Hoppers get ready. Sam Baker, more commonly known as Samiyam, is soon to release his latest album, Sam Baker’s Album. While the title may seem a little mundane, word on the street is that the album itself is quite the opposite.

Due for release on June 28 on Brainfeeder, the long awaited album is set to be a hip hop sensation. In 40 minutes, the album provides a variety of funk, soul, dubstep and ofcourse hip hop beats.

The popular LA artist moved to LA around 5 years ago, and since then has been a major influence in hip hop music. With his previous works being immediate hits, it is safe to assume his latest mix of ‘favourites’ will not disappoint.

WAMi FESTIVAL SATURDAY SPECTACULAR

Last weekend saw this year’s 2011 WAMi Festival return for another showcase of Perth’s best local talent. With over 50 bands and artists playing across eight venues, the event also included the announcement of the 2011 WAMi award winners. For some of the bands it was a more successful day than they’d planned, with several performers picking up awards as well.

Local band Russian Winters and Simone and Girlfunkle were among those that performed at The Court. As bass player for both bands, band member Rob Stevens walked away with WAMi’s ‘Best Bassist’ award. Similarly, Davey Craddock and The Spectacles performed at Mustang bar, with their drummer Todd Picket picking up ‘Best Drummer’ award. ‘Best Country Music Act’ Ruby Boots also performed at Mustang bar.

USURPER OF MODERN MEDICINE DEBUT EP

Perth band Usurper of Modern Medicine have just released their first EP, Acid Chess. The band, which has been labelled everything from electronic, rock, indie and alternative to experimental and avant garde, are leaving their mark in Perth’s music scene. Made up of Perth acts Injured Ninja, Mile End and Carbuncle, the band’s recent nomination for WAMi’s ‘Most Promising New Act’ award reflects their current success.

The EP has been over six months in the making and is made up of a combination of both original tracks, as well as remixes from Apricot Rail, French Rockets and Yarkhob. When you listen to the originals, you can hear the combination of genres within each song, as a variety of unique beats, vocals and instruments are cleverly blended into a single track. If you enjoy listening to the likes of Holy F*ck, PVT and Battles, then you’ll be sure to enjoy Acid Chess.

COPIOUS EP LAUNCH

COPIOUS EP LAUNCH

By Hard Focus

Welcome to a great Perth venue, The Newport Hotel in Freo. Copious are set to release thier E.P and the night calls for it as we journey to the more passive side of Perths music scene.

Paltiva opened the night with a high energy set fused with some great, thick and husky vocals leading to an already substantial crowd at the Newport. The bass player seemed absolutely captured by the music as he thrashed his dreadlocks around to some unique riffs reminiscent of the great 90’s rock, however the all over sound was rather diverse.

Next up we had a mood change with Opia setting the scene on a smooth atmospheric intro before easing into some slow thoughtful songs. They portayed timeless movements to some more edgy pieces that built and brought a full force of dynamics for a three piece. You got a great feeling what these guys were playing was meaningful even instrumentally with some nice heavily delayed guitar solos and the use of sound effects made it feel like you were being told a story. The set did seem to drag a bit in the end, and a little versatility would not have gone astray. Defiantely check these guys out and decide for yourself.

Here we were, no delay. Kicking off thier set as a green silhouette the crowd packed to the front and seemingly at times louder than the band itself. The opening track ‘I’ve Been There Before’ had immense feel whilst delivering song after song with immense progressions, dynamics and atmosphere. Slow and heavy the band took a brief time out to treat us with an acoustic track featuring most of the members on percussion, it may have been something they hadn’t done before but it was certainly an aural treat with some epic builds and breakdowns. Be sure to pick up the E.P or catch them at a future show.
