Music Feeds LIVE: Soundwave Edition – Ronnie Radke Interview Streaming This Friday

Friday, February 27th, 2015

Falling in Reverse frontman and founding Escape the Fate member Ronnie Radke has been burying hatchets left and right for the past year and while in the country for Soundwave, he’ll be stopping by Music Feeds Studio to tell us all about it in a special live streamed interview as a part of Music Feeds Live.

Falling In Reverse and Escape The Fate have been taking their Bury The Hatchet tour across North America the past year as a symbol of the end of animosity between the two bands which began when Radke’s post as Escape The Fate frontman was taken up by bandmate Craig Mabbitt. Those wounds seem now to be healed now.

Radke will be heading to Music Feeds fresh from one such ‘Bury The Hatchet’ Sidewave in Melbourne and just before kicking off another in Sydney. He’ll also chat with us about Falling In Reverse’s third full-length record, Just Like You, which was released just days ago.

All this week, Music Feeds has been hosting a special Soundwave edition of Music Feeds LIVE, where some of your favourite Soundwave acts stop by in between Sidewaves and Soundwave Sydney/Brisbane for live performances and exclusive interviews. It kicked off this weeks with an electrifying set by Finnish cello rockers Apocalyptica.

To experience what is sure to be a very interesting chat with Ronnie Radke, tune in right here from 2:40pm AEDT this Friday, 27th February, when Radke’s interview is streamed across the internet from Music Feeds Studio.

Before Radke’s interview kicks off on Friday, Illinois post hardcore act The Color Morale will be performing live from Music Feeds.

Make sure you tune in on Thursday too, when Glasgow rockers Twin Atlantic stream live from Music Feeds.

Chet Faker at Chevron Festival Gardens

Wednesday, February 25th, 2015

Screen shot 2015-02-25 at 12.16.23 PMReview by Nicola Heyes
Chet Faker stole the hearts from the roaring crowds at Perth’s Chevron Festival Gardens last night.
The Melbourne electronica musician, who scooped the top spot of Triple J’s Hottest 100 in January 2015, with Talk is Cheap, gave a superb energetic performance at the sell out gig.
Faker – who hangs somewhere in between electronica and house with deep soul-like vocals – jumped from his amazing DJ mixing desk to cool, contemplative lyrics and the down tempo beat certainly wowed Perth.
Chet, or rather Nick Murphy’s (real name) love of jazz and upbringing on Motown with the likes of Smokey Robinson, Aretha. Franklin and Otis Redding, is where he got his “love for a good hook, a good soul hook – really smooth and warm from the heart”.
His name Chet Faker is an ode to jazz artist Chet Baker – and the mood of music with fragile lyrics he used to play.
As well as his hits from his debut album Built in Glass, such as Release Your Problems, Gold and Talk is Cheap, – which were welcomed by some screaming members of the audience – he covered a Van Morrison Classic, Moondance. Sung with a real moody groove, Faker, admitted he’d only sung the song a couple of times but he turned down the speed of the original song and delivered it with slow, true passion, as though the song was very much his own.
Talking to the crowd (which upon looking around was a real mixture of age groups, from young hipsters, Triple J followers, to people in their 40s, 50s and 69s), he said that this was probably his most ‘intimate gig so far”.
The Chevron Festival Gardens is an intimate space and a fantastic pop up venue. With boutique beers on tap, trendy food stalls and fantastic art works hanging all over the place – from a vinyl record wall to recycled bath tubs – it has a cool back-yard feel. The hidden gardens have a brilliant vibe and is  the ultimate festival hang-out – with the queues to prove it. It’s such a shame it’s not a permanent venue.
Faker performed a cracking version of Blackstreet’s ‘No Diggity’ – which certainly got the crowds going as he asked everyone to join in singing. And everyone did.
All of a sudden it was time for the encore, where did the time go?
It felt like an emotional night, under the fairy lights of this small venue, listening to the laid back tunes and fantastic smoky vocals.
It was great to chill with Chet.

Anger Management: Blind Guardian

Wednesday, February 25th, 2015

Every fortnight, we check in with all things heavy on RTRFM’s Critical Mass show.

It’s hard to believe it’s been five years between albums for Blind Guardian. After riding high on the success of At The Edge of Time for so long, they’ve really upped the ante with their new release, Beyond the Red Mirror. They have once again blended orchestral and choir pieces to great effect, enlisting the services of studios in Prague, Budapest and Boston. This is particularly evident in the grandiose chorus of “The Holy Grail” or the haunting intro to opener “The Ninth Wave”.

The entire album is a follow up to the song “Imaginations from the Other Side” (the title track from their 1995 album), which explored various fantasy tales (Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, among others). But this is far from a Disney soundtrack; though far removed from their early speed metal days, the trademark riffs and solos still pack the right amount of punch. Evidence of this can be found in leading single “Twilight of the Gods”.

While some might dismiss their latest efforts as more of the same, there’s no doubt that fans will feel like they’ve died and gone to power metal heaven when listening to familiar Guardian traits such as the galloping drums backing a soaring chorus in “Sacred Mind” or Andre Olbrich’s impressive lead work. Hansi Kursch’s vocals are also top-notch – whilst he doesn’t have a huge range, his style matches the music and it all just feels like a classic Blind Guardian album.

Sure, there’s a tried and true vibe about them, but that’s always been the beauty of Blind Guardian; there’s a certain comfort in knowing what you’re gonna get. But play it again and again and you’ll notice Blind Guardian’s subtle evolution over the years.

For fans of: Helloween, Rhapsody, Running Wild.

Critical Mass airs every Wednesday from 9PM (GMT+8) on RTR FM 92.1 in Perth, Australia.

Kapital — Chaos to Chaos

Tuesday, February 24th, 2015

Collaboration has greatly enhanced the growth of and quality of material blazing forth from the independent experimental music scene in Poland. The music produced by an enclave of experienced and thoughtful musicians through their solo projects or more established groups has expanded wonderfully via new creative partnerships drawn from different backgrounds and fields of expertise. A notable example is that of Kapital, whose second album, Chaos To Chaos, is due for release through Instant Classic in early March.

Kapital brings together two of Poland’s most exciting figures in contemporary experimental music: Kuba Zio?ek and Rafa? Iwa?ski. Kuba is well known for his amazing solo work with Stara Rzeka, as well as the Alameda incarnations Ed Wood and T’ien Lai (amongst others). His expressions of drone, noise and powerful psychedelic soundscapes laced with beautiful acoustic guitar are a consuming experience of musical ecstasy. Rafa? has traversed a fascinating musical path, from discovering punk in the late 80s through to industrial music and krautrock as the fall of communism took place in his country. This expanded into a fascination with traditional ethnic and acoustic sounds, culminating in an academic path as an ethnologist. His intent to merge the traditional with modern electronics and create deep meditative spaces through sound has manifested in the brilliant work of HATI, X-Navi:Et, and curation of the CoCArt Music Festival. Both were involved in the formation of the rightly critically acclaimed Innercity Ensemble, whose most recent work made many a list of the top albums of 2014. As would be expected, the collaboration of these two musicians of different musical backgrounds has provided engrossing work quite distinctive from their other productions.

Critics are trained to break down the influences of musicians and attempt a transformation of this into some kind of easily digestible nugget of definition for readers. The music of Kapital (and, indeed, all of the projects these two musicians are involved with) comes from such a thoughtful and complex place that it magnifies how trite and inadequate such an attempt can be. The thought processes and inspiration behind the music are detailed and deep, drawing as much, if not more, inspiration from literature than the road markers laid down by previous artists. The sound of Kapital crosses many boundaries and, at its core, aims to keep the listener in a meditative moment. It feels inappropriate to describe the sound in terms of other reference points and much better to relinquish such habits and give yourself up to the goal of being lost in the moment.

The sonic palette has expanded on Kapital’s second album. Last year’s debut, No New Age, built up massive droning edifices that engulfed the horizon completely. Chaos To Chaos feels more spacious and detailed, including a wider range of acoustic sources amidst the electronics and effects. As noise goes, it is more delicate than its predecessor, delivering a superb progression and exploration rather than simply renovation of established creation. Hypnotic and tranquil loops course through the psychedelic ambience, enhancing the meditative essence of the record.

2015 will be a busy time for both of these musicians, with a number of performances and other releases planned. With X-Navi:Et’s Dead City Voice / Remix Project already out in January and proving a fascinating and essential experience, Kapital’s Chaos To Chaos will shine amongst the welcome proliferation of creativity, brimming with the cerebral and the spiritual, that Kuba and Rafa? will give to the world in the year ahead.

Chaos to Chaos is out March 2 through Instant Classic.

The Black Captain DJs at the newly launched Electric Funeral Club with Jess Kill and Anger Management’s Scott Williams this Wednesday the 25th at The Velvet Lounge.

Antennas to Heaven: Colin Stetson and Sarah Neufeld

Monday, February 23rd, 2015

Your biweekly submersion into new and experimental music.

With the conclusion of the exceptional New History for Modern Warfare albums, Colin Stetson has turned to fellow session musician Sarah Neufeld for his next endeavor. Neufold’s most notable work includes her role as the main violinist in Arcade Fire as well as various projects in which she and Stetson played together.

On debut release Never were the way she was, the duo bring their respective instruments to introduce what Constellation Records calls the “metaphorical narrative of the life of a girl who ages slow as mountains; excited, exalted, and ultimately exiled in her search for a world that resembles her experience.”

The idea of the concept album isn’t exactly out of reach for the two when you consider Stetson’s ability to conjure the image of a lumbering behemoth on “To see more light” and Neufold’s harrowing and emotive solo work on tracks like “Hero Brother”. “The sun roars into view” is our first taste from the duo and begins with the polyrhythmic interplay of both instruments. Stetson, once based in the deep timbres of sax, now portrays a delicate sound – a frailty not otherwise present in his previous work. Together, the two form an incredibly moving combination that’s equal parts catharsis and soul destroying beauty.

Never were the way she was is out on April 28 through Constellation Records.
