Two Minutes With Lo!

Friday, October 10th, 2014

We spend a couple of minutes with Adrian Shapiro of Lo! ahead of their support slot for Torche in Sydney and find out what’s new…

What’s going on in the world of Lo!?
We’ve just finished recording a new EP called The Tongueless which we will be releasing here and overseas in late November. We’ve been a bit quiet on the gig front after a large tour cancellation mid year, so we’re pretty psyched for this upcoming Torche show!

What motivates you to make music?
Personally I get a lot out of the cathartic nature of heavy music. Loud music, intense playing, screaming. All powerful releases for the body. Besides the internal personal reasons I love touring to new places and meeting great people.

What have been the high and low points of your musical experiences so far??
The greatest high to date would be the 25 date European tour we did with Cult of Luna and The Ocean. Playing that often on a run of shows in a different city every night was incredible and getting to not only attend but play Roadburn Festival in Holland was a dream come true. Exhausting but incredible.

Low point would be some of the harrowing drives we had to do on that tour with minimal sleep and tough time lines. One particular one was a 14 hour drive between two cities in Romania that really should have taken 8 hours except there were three head on collisions and four over turned trucks on the very dubious road. It was a drive of constant fear.

What music are you listening to at the moment?
I’ve got a two and a half year old so I’m currently listening to a lot of the soundtrack to the movie Frozen. Besides that, I’ve been listening to a lot of Baptists, Pig Destroyer and Nails at the moment. Helps the day speed past.

If you were stranded on a desert island, which member of the band would get eaten first?
I’d say most likely Carl. He is the smallest and weakest of us all, but he has strong calves so I think his meat would probably be quite flavorsome.

Here’s an opportunity to bitch about something, whether music related or not. What really pisses you off?
Dickheads in bands. They’re out there. Self-righteous, self-entitled, brats. Just relax and have a good time. Just because you don’t like a type of music that another band is playing or they’re not wearing their socks at the right height or some other crucial element of their band attire. Remember to breathe dudes!

You’re putting together your perfect gig featuring Australian artists. Who would you get to play and where? Feel free to include acts/DJs/bands/venues that no longer exist.
Mindsnare, Midnight Oil, MYC , The Birthday Party and Lo! at The Annandale.

Lo! join Sumeru in supporting Torche on Sunday October 19 at The Oxford Art Factory in Sydney. Tickets on sale now through life is noise.
