A Minute With Sugarpuss

Friday, November 16th, 2012

We spend a minute with Sugarpuss ahead of their single launch tonight at The Bird.

Describe your music in five words or less.
Oscillate, Delay, Fuzz, Drums, Swoosh!

What’s going on right now in the world of Sugarpuss?
Releasing our first single at The Bird tonight (November 16).
We recorded a bunch of songs with Malcolm Clark at Yoyo Studios earlier in the year and are just learning how to play some of them live. We entered one into the WAM song of the year comp and it won the “Love” category so we figured it could be our first single.

We’ve also just recruited our fifth member – Thom Wolfe (Blud/Funnilingus) to play extra synth and percussion so we are able to pull off some of the sounds and vibes we captured in the studio.  So we’re just rehearsing a new live set, which is really exciting for us all as the sound has grown into a larger, dreamier animal with more limbs and tricks than before…

What are the worst and best gigs you’ve ever played and why?
Worst: we played a gig a few weeks ago for some stage practice and it was so quiet that even the DJ bailed when he saw the empty room. Either that or supporting The Vasco Era at a uni Tav: the expectations of awesomeness far outweighed the reality of drunk uni students yelling at us.
Best: We did the West Australian leg of San Cisco’s “Awkward” tour last year: lots of kids, lots of lights, even some fights… Fun!

Tell us something about your music that we might not know.
We sampled John Lennon’s back-up vocals for one of our new songs and he sits in there really nicely! Umm… Brian our bass player is a loose unit and writes the most classic tunes out of us all. Titles such as “Don’t Forget To Put The Magic In” are amongst his finest moments, and he wrote the music for “Falling Outta Love” which is the single we’re releasing.

You’re putting together your perfect local gig? Who would you get to play, why and where? Feel free to include acts/DJs/bands/venues that no longer exist.
Woah what a task! OK… How about, “for the hell of it”, a country field, maybe Toodyay or down south… take a generator, build a festival-ready stage and line-up something like this:
(line-up subject to change)

DJ Douche Unit, Ben Witt (Solo), The Good Boys, Mayor Dadi, HAMJAM, Shy Panther, The Growl, The Weapon Is Sound, Pond, The Sleepy Jackson
