FLYING HIGH

If you’re still stuck for what to do this New Years Eve, then why not head down to the Rosemount? Joining the killer line-up of Red Jezebel, Will Stoker & The Embers, Sons Of Rico, Emperors, Split Seconds, Simone & Girlfunkle and Tomas Ford is the peculiar sounding Pelicans Of Paris. Even though their name might not be familiar, their faces and their set list certainly are. Tickets are $20 plus BF from Planet, Mills, Star Perth and Heatseeker, while it’s $10 plus BF to restrict your partying to the beer garden and DJ Shannon Fox’s tunes. SURF CITY LIMITS

That’s right everyone. City Beach, as in, the surf clothing store in Perth Murray Street Mall is playing host to an awesome in-store music bonanza that runs over 12 dates. On the bill are some of Perth’s best up and coming acts: Tracksuit, Hostile Little Face, HYTE, Pigeon and The Corner. They’ll all be joined by US punk band (hed)pe. If you stick around, you’ll be able to meet and greet your favourite act at the in-store signing after gigs. Not only this, you have the chance to score some of the hottest gear this summer if you drop in during the ‘Hour of Power’ promotions because there will be a stack load of freebies from sponsors Loosekid Industries, Skull Candy, Sly Underwear and Unit. STILL GOT THE BLUES

Playing a potent mixture of blues, zydeco, rockabilly, Louisiana music and western swing with an emphasis on dance beats, The Zydecats are one of Perth’s finest bands which features the likes of Lucky Oceans, Bill Rogers, Kent Hughes, Graeme Bell and Ric Eastman. They play the first Perth Blues Club gathering of the year this Tuesday, January 4, alongside the Gary Cox Band and Andrew Winton and Paul Novosel at the Charles Hotel. On Tuesday, January 11, a celebration of piano takes place with Great 88 and on Tuesday, January 18, the Shinkickers, Power Train and Rufus & The Night Herons take to the stage.

COURTYARD MUSIC IN FREO

Fremantle Art Centre’s much loved free music series Courtyard Music is happening every Sunday until the end of March. If you’re up for picnics or a cruisey Sunday session then this might just be for you. It’s a family friendly event and the music kicks off at 2pm. On Sunday, February 13, the West Australian Symphony Orchestra will be making an appearance at the beautiful event. WASO are one of the country’s top ensembles and punters will have the opportunity to soak up the sunshine and listen to their sweet tunes for free. What could be better! Other highlights on the Courtyard Music calendar include the return of iconic Don Walker of Cold Chisel fame with his band the Lucky Strikes and country pop icons, The Honeys. SUNSET SOUNDS

Pack a picnic basket, grab your friends and head on down to Theatre Gardens in Subiaco at 5pm on Sunday, January 2, to indulge in an evening of free music courtesy of the Sunset @ Subi series. As the summer sun sets over Perth, Trio Alegra and The Velvettes will take to the stage for a sumptuous evening of cabaret and gypsy tunes. The fun continues every Sunday during January and February, with sets from artists such as De Ness on Sunday, January 9, Toby Beard on Sunday, January 16, and Mister and Sunbird on Sunday, January 23.

GOING TROPPO

The sights and sounds of the tropics will take over Kulcha in Fremantle on New Year’s Eve for an Indian Ocean party the likes of which Perth has never seen before. Head on in to Kulcha to welcome in 2011 with help from Grace Barbe’s Afro Kreol from the Seychelles, the Exotisme Band from Reunion Island, Mahamoud Selimane and Band from Mozambique, DJ Luan from Seychelles and Tropical Addiction. WILD WEST COMEDY IS COMING

The Wild West Comedy Festival is in May but it will come up faster than Easter so get onto this right now before it sells out. A ridiculous amount of local, interstate and international comedians will be gracing Perth town for a range of comedy shows and of course, the Opening Night Gala. Tim Ferguson and Dave O’Neil are just two of the big names that will be delivering laughter for the masses. The Gala takes place on Wednesday, May 18, at the Astor Theatre. Tickets are from $45.50.
