Jaga Jazzist – One Armed Bandit

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Jaga Jazzist’s brand of jazz is both chill and energetic; turn the volume down if you’re mellow or turn it up to psyche yourself out.

‘One-armed Bandit’ is the latest album from this Norwegian nine-piece, and it’s at times overly ambitious in its dizzying whirlpool of instruments (marxophone, temple blocks, mandolin harp, marimba and glockenspiel to name a few). It’s a sound that gets right in your face and forces you to listen to every small detail, even if you don‘t want to. The album involves some post rock epic, shoegazey guitar, electronic beats, and of course experimental jazz. While occasionally overbearing, richly textured arrangements provide much needed stimulation through a disparate mix of influences. Standouts include ‘Bananfluer Overalt’ – two parts sixties bachelor lounge, one part spy jazz, and peppered with sunny country twang.
‘220 V/Spektral’ is another delight, starting with sugary sweet piano, moving into simmering guitars that pulsate with distortion, then building toward a relentless drum beat at 6:12.

‘Toccata’ brings anxious piano together with weighty trombone, then a fadeout conclusion that leaves you wondering and hanging out for resolution. The album’s best track comes last with the suspenseful ‘Touch of Evil’, intermittently rocking out in scratchy guitar against frenetic drumming, under-the-radar bass, handclaps and forceful organ.

The song holds you in a grip for 6 minutes and 40 seconds, then abruptly drops you. ‘Music! Dance! Drama!’is the weakest link, directionless in contrast to the focused thrills of other tracks.
Overall ‘One-armed Bandit’will overwhelm you, but in a (mostly) good way.
