GO EAST

Easily one of Australia’s most interesting songwriters and performers, Zulya is almost single handedly responsible for introducing Australian audiences to the music of Russia – namely the central Tatar region of her birth. An ARIA Award winner and highly respected in world music circles both here and in Europe, Zulya’s sixth and latest album, Tales Of Subliming, is her most experimental to date, fusing the fairytales of her childhood with a more experimental musical style that sees her both singing in English and sound-checking artists such as Portishead.

“I listen to a lot of different music,” Zulya tells X-Press. “There’s always, of course, my heritage and I initially started performing doing that. But it wasn’t enough for me to do traditional music – I wanted to write my own music and went on from there. There are lots of temptations in music.”

Zulya showcases her beautiful new record tonight, Thursday, April 22, at the Don Russell Performing Arts Centre in Thornlie and Friday, April 23, at Kulcha. Ticket info and full details are available at zulya.com.

Dollars and Cents of Schooling

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced a review of the current federal school funding system.

The controversial “socio-economic status” model introduced by the Howard government is due to expire in 2012.

It determines how much funding will go to a school based on the socio-economic profile of the suburb it’s in – not how many disadvantaged students they cater for or how much they charge parents.

Former ALP leader Mark Latham was famously undone for suggesting the system be changed, with the Liberals accusing him of launching an attack on private education.

So – how should the government proceed with a new funding model?

Damian Smith went back to school with the Australian Education Union President Angelo Gavrielatos on Morning Magazine.
