MY DISCO

In what will be their first and only Australian tour for 2011, Melbourne trio My Disco play the Bakery on Saturday April 16 to launch the deluxe double LP version of their 2010 release Little Joy. Each record will come complete with a 24” x 24” fold out poster, etched vinyl and a free MP3 download, plus there will also be a limited number of green and white swirled LPs available.

Little Joy, My Disco’s third album, was released in October of last year to much fanfare, with Rolling Stone deeming it their “finest yet”, and The Vine describing it as “crushingly, terrifyingly great: so far ahead of the pack as to be in a different universe altogether”.

WAMi Award Nominations

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

The WAMi Awards are once again fast-approaching. It’s that time of the year where the local music industry gets together to bestow cake-based prizes on some pretty great musicians and industry figures.
The awards night itself will take place on Saturday, May 28 at The Bakery, with Craft Awards being presented throughout the afternoon at the various Saturday Spectacular venues. Public Voting will be open from April 14 until midday May 6, at the WAM website.

The rather extensive nominees list is out now. To view it click here

Efrim Menuck Preps Solo Debut

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

Hirsute post-rock innovator Efrim Menuck is set to release his debut solo album Plays “High Gospel” on the 24th of May. As the driving force behing the Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Thee Silver Mt. Zion, Menuck has been responsible for some of the most ambitious and successful explorations of the limits of what rock music can acheive and transcend. Plays “High Gospel” appears to be a more personal work laden with death and grief, opposed to his more political work with GY!BE. There is little information available about the record apart from what is written here, but it sounds tantalising; ‘i am a motherless child’ advertises itself as an “unabashedly celebratory pop song”. I’m not expecting something akin to Yazoo, but stranger things have happened.

Check his soundcloud, featuring two tracks from the album, here.

HELMET TOWN

HELMET TOWN

Seminal hard rock band Helmet return to Australia for the first time in three years, following sell-out shows across the US and Europe and on the back of their album Seeing Eye Dog, released in September 2010. The first album released through the independent Work Song label, it was produced by band leader/vocalist/guitarist/songwriter Page Hamilton. It makes for an uncompromising and ruthless album that still embodies the unique Helmet sounds they’re famous for. Catch them Tuesday, June 28, at Amplifier. Tickets from Moshtix, Planet, Mills and 78 Records.
