DEAD SPEAK

After pulling out of their January gigs, Emmure are back to promote their fourth album Speaker Of The Dead. The heavy metal band, notorious for their intense live performances, is returning later this year for two shows on Saturday, June 19. They’ll play an all a ges afternoon show at HQ in Leederville, followed by an 18+ gig at Amplifier that night. They’ll be joined by Sydney heavyweights Shinto Katana. ON THE LISSIE

Join singer-songwriter Lissie for her first headlining Australian tour, at The Fly By Night on Saturday, May 14. Lissie has already toured with artists such as Ray LaMontagne, The Low Anthem, and City And Colour; now it’s Australia’s turn to experience the Midwestern singer. US and UK audiences have already caught on to the sweet, melancholy sounds of her debut album Catching A Tiger, which shows the singer’s effortless ability to range from bluesy-folk to pop. Hola, senores and senoritas! The Spanish Film Festival is rolling into town for 2011 at Cinema Paradiso. Opening night on Wednesday, May 25, features the Australian premiere of the Tarantino-esque The Last Circus (Balada Triste de Trompeta), which tells the story of two clowns competing for the love of the most beautiful and cruel lady in the circus.

SUCH GRACE

With a voice described as capable of “caressing your eardrums and then punching you in the face in the blink of an eye”, Perth chanteuse Grace Woodroofe’s silky smooth vocals are indeed going to cause some aural delight. She’s joined by Sydney lads WIM and London-born songstress Emma Davis at The Bird on Friday, April 16, and at The Newport Hotel on Saturday, April 17. You have until May 6 to vote in categories such as Best Album, Most Popular Music Venue and Most Popular Act… oh, and the Media Award for Best Organisation (hint hint). You can also pick up a copy of the 2011 Kiss My WAMi CD/DVD, which includes three CDs and a DVD full of West Australian artists from Jebediah to The Novocaines. HAPPY GO LUCKY

It’s rare to hear that things in the Middle East are ‘happy’, unless you’re talking about whimsical indie band The Middle East and their forthcoming debut I Want That You Are Always Happy. The WA Art Gallery’s ArtBar season will play host to some pretty big names later this year when Robert Forster, Kinky Friedman and Van Dyke Parks arrive in Perth to share music and musings with local audiences. On Thursday, June 30, Texan novelist, singer-songwriter and politician Kinky Friedman will take to the stage at ArtBar, joined by his close friend Van Dyke Parks, for what we’re sure is going to be an unforgettable night.
