Long before minimalism and white walls, an uncovered surface was considered ugly, and a plain wall was unfinished, said Michael Lech, a research curator with Museums of History NSW’s Caroline Simpson Library, Wallpapers of huge flowers like those seen in series The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, based on Holly Ringland’s best seller of the same name, were very popular in the early half of the 20th century.
