Vinyl Retention: Ivy Lab

Wednesday, February 6th, 2013

Every Wednesday, Sardi lets us know what’s tickling his eardrums in the world of dance music…

When three talented producers in their own right come together to form a D&B super group, you know it’s going to be something special. Enter Ivy Lab.

The brainchild of Sabre, Stray & Halogenix, Ivy Lab’s debut release on the mighty Critical imprint is something extremely special. Featuring the vocal talents of Frank Carter III (who flexed his vocals on the trio’s ‘Oblique’ almost a year ago) ‘Afterthought’ is anything but what the title leads you to believe. It’s pure, lush & soulful Drum & Bass at it’s finest. Rich chords, reversed guitar licks and deep bass lace a simple rolling break, giving room for Frank’s sublime vocals to emanate through.

On the flip, ‘Brat’ takes things on a darker tangent with reverberated bleeps and experimental beats. It’s an unusual accompaniment to the A-Side, but shows that the trio has more than one dimension to their sound.

Rounding out the single is the South London Ordnance Remix of ‘Brat’ which brings the tempo down to House territory but keeps the vibe moody and techie.

Fantastic (somewhat) debut release from Ivy Lab that is a must have for lovers of quality D&B.
