 Tura New Music seeks an experienced and self-motivated leader to head-up its business operations. With a busy program planned for 2021 and beyond, this is an opportunity to join one of Australia’s most vibrant and innovative arts organisations and to work alongside Tura’s founder and Artistic Director, Tos Mahoney.

In addition to leading the corporate operations and its and dedicated team, the Executive Director will have primary responsibility for Tura’s government funding programs including submissions, acquittals and reporting. Exceptional budget and project management skills are a must. The role will suit someone who is self-disciplined, attentive, motivated, innovative and culturally aware.

Terms Two (2) year fixed term
Hours This is a full time position, however flexible arrangements may be negotiated.
Reports to Artistic Director / CEO
Direct reports Administrator, Development Manager, Communications & Marketing Manager and other contracted personnel as needed


The Executive Director (ED) works closely with the Artistic Director/CEO to develop, implement and manage Tura’s financial and operational business plans. The role is responsible for ensuring that administrative and planning systems and processes support the overall achievement of Tura’s objectives.

In addition to coordinating day to day business activities, the ED also holds primary responsibility for administering government grants. Whilst overall strategic responsibility for funding body relationships rests with the Artistic Director/CEO, the ED will be in regular communication with agency contract managers while closely monitoring the application and expenditure of funds.


1.     Financial Management and Governance

  • Contribute to strategic planning, business planning, budgeting and financial performance measurement
  • In consultation with the AD/CEO, develop, monitor and manage budgets for the Company’s annual program of activities and general operations
  • Liaise with accounting personnel to develop appropriate and timely reports for the Finance and Risk Management Committee, the Board and funders/partners as required
  • Ensure that finance, enterprise risk and governance matters are managed in accordance with legislative, statutory and company policy requirements, including delegated authorities
  • Conduct organisational and project risk assessments and follow up on mitigation actions
  • Represent Tura in dealings with stakeholders including government agencies, partners, sponsors and business contractors

2.     First Nations Partnerships and Protocols

  • In consultation with the AD/CEO, maintain and further develop Tura’s business relationships with First Nations organisations and communities throughout Australia
  • Ensure correct protocols are applied to all First Nations relationship dealings and project matters

3.     Growth and financial sustainability

  • Ensure Tura has a business development framework that supports its growth and strategic plans
  • Oversee and manage Tura’s government funding program, including authoring and acquitting submissions, contract management, periodic reporting and other deliverables
  • Foster and maintain continuing relationships with key agency contacts to ensure the continuance and growth of Tura’s funding
  • Seek new opportunities for government funding and stay abreast of sector developments
  • Represent, and advocate for, Tura in communications with existing and potential sponsors, donors and partners
  • In consultation with the Development Manager, develop and implement a targeted development strategy to expand Tura’s engagement with the philanthropic sector and maximise Tura’s philanthropic income streams

4.     People and culture

  • Oversee the day to day workflow of administration, communications and development personnel and foster a positive, collaborative workplace culture
  • Promote and support diversity throughout all levels of Tura operations
  • Manage work performance, development and review processes for reporting personnel
  • Contribute to strategic planning of resourcing requirements
  • Prepare and maintain employment records and contracts
  • Ensure organisational compliance with WHS legislation and consult regularly with team on safety issues
  • Contribute to Tura’s culturally appropriate engagement with artists and communities both in Australia and internationally 

5.     Project and office management

  • Create and manage project plans in accordance with resourcing and strategic plans
  • Coordinate the management of, and provide hands on assistance with, project logistics, including contract administration, scheduling, travel and accommodation arrangements, protocol documentation
  • Support the Artistic team to manage presentations and productions, including venue liaison, engagement and management of production personnel, Front of House management and VIP liaison
  • In consultation with the Artistic Director, monitor, evaluate and report on the progress of projects and operational activities and proactively problem-solve to support the achievement and success of Tura’s planned program
  • Manage and review service contracts including ICT support and leasing
  • Manage operational calendars to track funding submission requirements and program logistics

6.     Systems and change management

  • Working closely across all teams, oversee the implementation and maintenance of Tura’s digital systems including a new CRM & website, project management, digital archive and internal file drives
  • Monitor and contribute to the continuous improvement of internal communications and project management systems
  • Foster a positive, proactive approach to systems management

7.     General responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development and review of policies and procedures and comply with requirements
  • Exercise a duty of care by working in a safe and efficient manner, having regard to own safety and that of others.
  • Ability and willingness to work out of business hours during projects and performance seasons
  • Actively promote and support Tura in the community

8.     Contributes to a values based organisation

  • A minimum of 5 years experience in a managerial role within a NFP environment as well as a relevant tertiary qualification
  • A sound understanding of the role of First Nations organisations and/or communities and knowledge of working with First Nations protocols
  • Exceptional finance and budget management skills with the ability to interpret financial reports
  • Demonstrated experience in team management with innovative problem solving skills and a collaborative approach to project achievement
  • Demonstrated experience in writing effective submissions, proposals and reports and a sound understanding of national funding pipelines
  • High level organisational, project management and strategic planning skills with the ability to juggle competing deadlines
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills with experience of representing an organisation in stakeholder communications
  • Highly developed computer literacy and a contemporary understanding of documentation, communications and customer management systems


  • Experience of working in the arts sector
  • Previous experience in a Business Development role with exposure to sponsorship arrangements
