We check in with all things heavy on RTRFM’s Critical Mass show.

OK… Hotshot…

This is the comedy death metal release of the year.

You can have your Austrian Death Machine.

Local surfin’ metalhead and father of two Owen Thomas has to endure a tough life living down in Bremer Bay, but despite the peaceful surroundings he has produced a laugh-a-second totally brutal piece of action movie surf metal goodness.

Songs on this PAPPAS EP are “fleshed out” more than the previous two EPs with the full gambit of elements that make this release a winner. Brutal death metal, slamming breakdowns, killer riffage, and quotable one liners from the movie Point Break. He’s even managed to expand on some cheeky studio trickery that ties in well. The epic “Surfin’” runs for four and a half minutes. You could probably fit 5–6 songs from previous efforts within that time. It’s disguised as a cover of Bloodbath’s “Eaten”, which is fitting because you could easily mistake some of Owen’s hearty throaty growl vocals to that of Mikael Akerfeldt’s more brutal moments in Bloodbath.

Everything on this release seems clearer, from the movie quotes, to the drums and vocals when compared to the previous two EPs.

I wonder if Owen can squeeze another release out of this concept, he might be struggling for the dregs of unused quotes.

Go get this album on Bandcamp, or go watch the movie again.

Better yet do both.
