In a new, regular column, we check in with all things heavy on RTRFM’s Critical Mass show.
There’s no doubt that metal has more than its fair share of sub-genres.
One style — rarely heard in Perth — is traditional / power / melodic metal, which has its roots firmly planted in the ‘80s and ‘90s when fast riffing, double-kicking, falsetto singing and six-string harmonies were the order of the day. Think bands like Helloween, Running Wild and Stratovarius. Perth band Silent Knight is another shining example. The lads have been active in the live arena for a couple of years and are gearing up to launch their debut album, ‘Masterplan’ during an action-packed show at Amplifier Bar this weekend.
Silent Knight will share the stage with premier Australian power/trad metallers Lord (NSW) in support of their forthcoming album ‘Digital Lies’ which is slated for a Feb 22 release.
Later this year Silent Knight will ride over east to unleash their ‘Masterplan’ on Sydney, but before they embark on any tours two of their five members will be in the RTRFM studio this Wednesday chatting to Critical Mass for the first time.
Earlier in Perth’s metal history bands like Syzygy and Black Steel flew the melodic metal flag for a number of years. More recently Mysteria, Trident Winter and Voyager have graced the local stages. Voyager is arguably Perth’s most well-known melodic metal outfit. They’ve been around since 1999, albeit with several line-up changes, and completed successful tours of Australia, Europe and the USA. Local bands of this flavour are few and far between, but they still have their legion of faithful followers.
