Anger Management: Amorphis

Tuesday, May 21st, 2013

We check in with all things heavy on RTRFM’s Critical Mass show.

Well a couple of years have passed since Finland’s finest, Amorphis, released Beginning of Times. Now like a well oiled machine, they’ve churned out another slab of melodic death metal treats under the title of new album Circle. In fact, their last four studio albums have been released biennually. No prizes for guessing the likely year of the next album release.

Anyway onto the new Circle album. It’s become quite the chart topper in their homeland over the last few weeks, which is always surprising to see melodic death metal in any popular album charts. I guess that’s what the kids are digging in Finland. Apparently on release, it peaked at number one. This week number six, but they still beat Mikey Bublé. It’s done alright on the Billboard charts as well.

Musically, it’s.. well Amorphis. They’re not treading any new ground here (other than their new range of BBQ sauce), but at the same time, they have strengthened their tried and tested sound over the last 9–10 years, with a trusty mix of catchy, melodic tracks such as “Into The Abyss”, with some Gruff’n’Scruff vocals from Tomi Joutsen on most of the other tracks. Throw in some intricate lead guitar work from founding member Esa Holopainen, and there you have the recognisable sound of Circle by Amorphis, which will delight their fans the world over.

Having never setting foot on these sunny shores, they have finally announced a tour here in October including Perth, which surely must result in a 80–90+ minute set, hopefully, with the new album in tow, plus a huge back catalogue to choose from.

FFO — Barren Earth, Korpiklaani, Nightwish, Children of Bodom, Taxiride.

Liars

Monday, May 20th, 2013

Brooklyn trio Liars have dropped a new track, which is hopefully a sign of a follow up to 2012’s WIXIW.

“I Saw You From The Lifeboat” ticks the fuzzed up and dirty boxes, with the track having a great, uneasy, “slightly slower than it should be” feel.

Take a listen to “I Saw You From The Lifeboat”, below.

Eat a Bag of Mix: Oni Cash

Eat a Bag of Mix is the name of a feature here on life is noise where we get a DJ, musician, producer, industry figure or just someone with good taste in fucked-up and weird music to give us a mix of music that has influenced them, or tunes that are currently rocking their world.

Oni C moved with his family to Osaka when he was young, he lived in a small apartment above a laundromat, little did he realise what the constant machine droning that sang him to sleep at night would instil in him for later life. After barefoot trekking through China, India and South East Asia he arrived eventually in Perth, the edge of the world…. here he spends his days learning to breath underwater in a ocean of vibration.

Vinyl Retention: Martsman

Wednesday, May 15th, 2013

Every Wednesday, Sardi lets us know what’s tickling his eardrums in the world of electronic music…

Known primarily for his D&B output, German producer Martsman steps up to Warm Communications sister label Pushing Red and delivers a stunning two-track release showcasing his penchant for deeper Techno influenced electronica.

Melding warping Techno bass stabs and riffs with Garage infused mid-tempo drums, Martsman infuses mood and groove into both sides of his latest release. Skippy snares, 909 hi-hats and solid bass hits carry ‘Shrank’ along, but there’s something about the sparse atmospherics and shuffling shakers of ‘NYCD’ that make this B-side the highlight of the single.

Great to see Martsman spreading his talents beyond the D&B realm.

If you like what you hear, be sure to tune in to RTRFM’s Full Frequency between 3pm & 5pm, as Sardi and Dart explore the latest beats & bass from around the globe.
