A Minute With Shy Panther

Friday, November 30th, 2012

We spend a minute with Shy Panther and find out what’s going on…

Describe your music in five words or less.
Hard for press to describe.

What’s going on right now in the world of Shy Panther?
Just polished off a couple of pieces of Vegemite toast, and hung out a load of washing… We were getting a little restless, so it seemed fitting that Abbe May knocked on our door and invited us on her Karmageddon Tour in December — 4 shows in a week. Bunbury, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth. The Mayans have warned us that the world stops on December 21, which is conveniently the last leg of the tour at the Bakery. Abbe is an incredibly talented and kind human, so the ‘end of the world party’ she has planned for you, sounds like it’s going to be “to-die-for”. We can’t wait. We’re also playing at RTR’s Seriously Sound System Festival, which is mental, and providing we pull through the apocalypse, we’ll be back at the Bakery for the Life Is Noise NYE bash – hey, kudos on that lineup, Life is Noise! Amongst all this, we’re gonna load up the basement with nonperishable goods and spend some more time down there, post-apocalypse, working on some new recordings n things… Hopefully there will be some people left to listen to them.

What are the worst and best gigs you’ve ever played and why?
Worst: most of the gigs we’ve played have been a lot of fun. Parklife was a bit weird though… I think we just ended up confusing a lot of people that day.
Best: Our Erving launch night at the Bird, was a lot of fun. Any gig at the Bird is a lot of fun, because of how welcoming the venue is, and how much of a genius the sound-guy there is… Can I say that? Given that their sound-guy is in our band now? Also, the Chet Faker gig at Mojo’s was the first show we’ve played to a full room of nearly dead-silent patrons — it’s a bizarre and sweet experience to hear a pin rattle’n’ding on the ground.

Tell us something about your music that we might not know.
Apart from us all coming from country-rock backgrounds, did you know that there are brothers in our band? Kynan and Rhien. And one of those brothers, Kynan, actually dates my sister. Which is actually how we all met. And did you know, our second drummer, Chris, is the sound guy at the Bird? Shy Panther — a feel good story.

You’re putting together your perfect local gig? Who would you get to play, why and where? Feel free to include acts/DJs/bands/venues that no longer exist.
I’m guessing, now that Felix Baumgartner’s “leap from space” stunt is over, there may be room for a new headline: “Music Daredevils, Shy Panther, host first ever festival on Mars”

I know we cheated a bit with the “local venue”, but here’s the local lineup:
Ku?ka + Ben Witt + MMHMMM + James Ireland + Savoir + Leure + Diger + Sugarpuss + The Growl + Abbe May + Kynan Tan + Ta-ku + the {MOVE} DJs +many more to be announced.… Did I mention that all these musicians will be accompanied by The Mars Symphony Orchestra..? The gig will be FREE too… Bang for your uncle buck!

A Minute With Sugarpuss

Friday, November 16th, 2012

We spend a minute with Sugarpuss ahead of their single launch tonight at The Bird.

Describe your music in five words or less.
Oscillate, Delay, Fuzz, Drums, Swoosh!

What’s going on right now in the world of Sugarpuss?
Releasing our first single at The Bird tonight (November 16).
We recorded a bunch of songs with Malcolm Clark at Yoyo Studios earlier in the year and are just learning how to play some of them live. We entered one into the WAM song of the year comp and it won the “Love” category so we figured it could be our first single.

We’ve also just recruited our fifth member – Thom Wolfe (Blud/Funnilingus) to play extra synth and percussion so we are able to pull off some of the sounds and vibes we captured in the studio.  So we’re just rehearsing a new live set, which is really exciting for us all as the sound has grown into a larger, dreamier animal with more limbs and tricks than before…

What are the worst and best gigs you’ve ever played and why?
Worst: we played a gig a few weeks ago for some stage practice and it was so quiet that even the DJ bailed when he saw the empty room. Either that or supporting The Vasco Era at a uni Tav: the expectations of awesomeness far outweighed the reality of drunk uni students yelling at us.
Best: We did the West Australian leg of San Cisco’s “Awkward” tour last year: lots of kids, lots of lights, even some fights… Fun!

Tell us something about your music that we might not know.
We sampled John Lennon’s back-up vocals for one of our new songs and he sits in there really nicely! Umm… Brian our bass player is a loose unit and writes the most classic tunes out of us all. Titles such as “Don’t Forget To Put The Magic In” are amongst his finest moments, and he wrote the music for “Falling Outta Love” which is the single we’re releasing.

Woah what a task! OK… How about, “for the hell of it”, a country field, maybe Toodyay or down south… take a generator, build a festival-ready stage and line-up something like this:
(line-up subject to change)

DJ Douche Unit, Ben Witt (Solo), The Good Boys, Mayor Dadi, HAMJAM, Shy Panther, The Growl, The Weapon Is Sound, Pond, The Sleepy Jackson

A Minute With Eris

Sunday, October 7th, 2012

We spend a minute with Eris ahead of their EP launch at The Den this Saturday…

ErisDescribe your music in five words or less.
Heavy, melodic, d-beat, crust.

What’s going on right now in the world of Eris?
We’re launching our EP on the 13th October at The Den and in the process of writing for a 12? to be released at the end of the year. There’s also talk of a South East Asia tour in the near future, which is pretty exciting.

What are the worst and best gigs you’ve ever played and why?
We’ve played all of 5 gigs since starting up a year ago and they’ve all been good times with close friends, so no horror stories yet…

Tell us something about your music that we might not know.
We bring our dog to jam for final approval of all Eris songs.

You’re putting together your perfect local gig? Who would you get to play, why and where? Feel free to include acts/DJs/bands/venues that no longer exist.
We like playing with bands like Helta Skelta, Grief Contest, The Hunt, Mt Mtn. Oh Wait. That’s the line up for our EP launch. Saturday 13th October. The Den. 8pm :)

But seriously, there’s some great local bands around at the moment, we can’t go without mentioning some of other favourites — Drowning Horse, Warthreat, Frozen Ocean, Agitated, The Choke…

A Minute With Leure

Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

We spend a minute with Leure and find out what’s what…

LeureDescribe your music in five words or less
electronic, ambient, beat alternative pop?

What’s going on right now in the world of Leure?
My debut album ‘Holland Sky’ has just been released through Inertia. Only just returned from my first visit over east to play a Sydney show that went exceptionally well, basically rolling with the amazing support I have been given and challenging myself as much as possible. I’m also studying full time, have two jobs and a jewellery label Wolf Love on the go, so life’s wildly hectic.…I dream often of Paris and french martinis.

What are the worst and best gigs you’ve ever played and why?
In terms of Leure — it’s a super new project, I’ve only been playing gigs a couple of months so not much action to go off. I’d say the best was probably my most recent at the Oxford Arts Factory in Sydney, cool venue and the most delightfully responsive crowd yet. Worst was probably one of the first when my hard drive had crashed, nothing was connecting and i had no idea how to fix it then and there — needed a fine drop of whisky to get me through that one.

Hmm, before March this year I’d never known how the hell electronic music was made. No idea. Stuck to my electric guitar and the occasional loop pedal if things got technical. Once I started experimenting with different programs other than my knowledge of protools I guess producing evolved and I had the skeleton of an album within a couple of weeks. So I’ve a hell of a lot to learn but I’m excited to challenge myself and progress further.

I’d have to have it at Mojos for obvious reasons — I’m also lucky enough to work there so feels like home. In terms of lineup there’s been some ridiculous talent leap out of Perth over the years, it would probably be an all day event to fit them all in! I guess I’m fortunate now to be surrounded by some pretty incredible friends who play music so I’d call in Pond, The Growl, Tame Impala, Gunns, Bastians Happy Flight, The Silents, MMHMMM, James Ireland, Greyjoy, Fall Electric, Apricot Rail, Felicity Groom — man the list is too long. That’s current acts alone — we could go back in time forever.

A Minute With Husband

Thursday, August 9th, 2012

We spend a minute with Husband and find out what’s happening…

HusbandDescribe your music in five words or less?
Brooding intense folk rock.

What’s going on right now in the world of Husband??
We’re playing a lot of Perth shows and just getting the name out there. I’m also currently writing and recording some more material for a release. I’m still waiting to see if we’ve been accepted for CMJ in New York this year, I’ll be so pumped if we get in.

What are the worst and best gigs you’ve ever played and why??
Best gig would have to be at The Quarry supporting The Whitlams. It was our third ever gig and the boys in Husband played so well, I was really wrapped. Plus the venue is set in an old limestone quarry, which helped make the vibe amazing.

Worst gig would have to be our second show. I drunk way to much Jagermeister, things got a bit out of control…

Tell us something about your music that we might not know?
For me to like a song I’ve recorded I have to be able to play it solo on an acoustic guitar and it needs to hold my attention. I really love producing a song and putting everything I can into the recording but I feel if a song can’t be played solo then there’s something lacking.

A show supporting Abbe May would be awesome. I love her songs, they sound genuine. The show would be at The Bakery, but without the circus tent. I loved how before when it rained everyone had to come inside and watch the support band.
