A Minute With Puck

Saturday, December 6th, 2014

We spend a couple of minutes with Liam Young of Puck ahead of the band’s support slot for Sleep on December 8 at The Bakery…

Describe your music in five words or less.
Dream Doom Stoner Rock.

What’s going on in the world of Puck?
We just won best Heavy/Metal Act at the WAM awards this year, which was just ridiculous… We’re really excited to finally put out our split EP with FOAM on 12? random coloured vinyl. Mmmmm… Not to mention our last show of the year is supporting SLEEP thanks to you legends!

What motivates you to make music?
It’s the only thing I was good at as a kid, so I suppose that was my motivation to keep playing through school. Now I find motivation in my band mates’ riffs. Something clicks and I have to put my shit all over it. Plus, I just love playing the drums.

What have been the high and low points of your musical experiences so far?
Touring Japan in 2012, that was a true insight. Working with amazing musicians and sound crew so commited to their craft. When I was 18, my other band The Novocaines supported Them Crooked Vultures. After the show we got really drunk and hung out with Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and fucking JPJ for a couple of hours. I shouldn’t complain too much, I have a lot of fun. But most of being a musician on tour kind sucks. Cancelled flights, jetlag, excess baggage fees, sharing air matresses, getting to the gig 5 hours early and noone gives a shit, stuff like that.

What music are you listening to at the moment?
Still on the new Code Orange album — I Am King, the new Caribou album is pretty cool and the Crazy Spirit LP from 2012. So good.

If you were stranded on a desert island, which member of the band would get eaten first?
Me. Not worth the effort though, I’m too skinny.

Here’s an opportunity to bitch about something, whether music related or not. What really pisses you off?
It pisses me off how difficult it is for WA bands to get a leg up on the east coast when it’s so expensive to get there. I don’t want to live there or anything, but it’d be nice not to come home with a total loss every national run.

You’re putting together your perfect gig featuring Australian artists. Who would you get to play and where? Feel free to include acts/DJs/bands/venues that no longer exist.
You Am I, The Church, Tumbleweed & Mark of Cain (with John Stanier) at the Belvoir. Fuck yeah.

Puck join Mt. Mountain in supporting Sleep at The Bakery in Perth on December 8. Tickets on sale now through lifeisnoise.com.

Two Minutes With Hard-Ons

Friday, December 5th, 2014

We spend a couple of minutes with Peter “Blackie” Black of homegrown punk legends Hard-Ons — who recently celebrated their 30 year anniversary — ahead of their show with Sleep at Sydney’s Manning Bar on December 13 and find out what’s new…

What’s going on in the world of Hard-Ons?
We’re having a well-earned break after a lot of 30 year anniversary stuff. Ray’s overseas with work buying records, Murray went on holidays and I’m putting the finishing touches on my 4th solo record.

What motivates you to make music?
The sheer joy that music gives you!

What have been the high and low points of your musical experiences so far?
The high point goes back to the sheer joy part. I mean everything — creating, performing, rehearsing… even lugging is a great way to stay in shape!

The low… in this country the fact that it’s such a financial struggle. It’s not like you have a bunch of songs ready to record and you go and do it. It’s more, “fuck, how can we afford this!?”

What music are you listening to at the moment?
Miles Davis — Live Evil and Dark Magus
Dwight Twilley Band — Twilley Don’t Care
Dust — Hard Attack
The Masters Apprentice — A Toast To Panama Red
King Crimson — Lizard
Kate Bush — Hounds Of Love

If you were stranded on a desert island, which member of the band would get eaten first?
Probably Murray ’cause he drinks a lot therefore is inherently weaker than myself or Ray.

Here’s an opportunity to bitch about something, whether music related or not. What really pisses you off?
The fact we now live in a right-wing and artless country. Four fucking terms of Howard and now Abbott. The way we behave as a nation really reflects who we have in office and it’s ALL BAD.

You’re putting together your perfect gig featuring Australian artists. Who would you get to play and where? Feel free to include acts/DJs/bands/venues that no longer exist.
Hmm way too hard to answer but… one of the most killer gigs of all time when I was a pup was Birthday Party with X and The Scientists… was breathlessly amazing!! Any venue for that one, even a toilet, couldn’t damped its killerness!

Hard-Ons support Sleep on the final show of Sleep’s Australian tour at Manning Bar in Sydney on Saturday December 13. Tickets on sale now from lifeisnoise.com.

Two Minutes With MAMMOTH MAMMOTH

Thursday, December 4th, 2014

We spend a couple of minutes with MAMMOTH MAMMOTH ahead of their support slot for Sleep at The Corner Hotel on Sunday December 7th.

What’s going on in the world of MAMMOTH MAMMOTH?
Bones: We’ve been pretty slack really, apart from writing and recording a new album this year. Jason PC (Blood Duster) produced it for us again, but he was building his new studio and kept asking us if we had any trade skills? Which of course we fucking absolutely do not. He kept trying to get us to stick up plaster and shit, and nail things. Anyway, the album is launching next January.
When we got through that, we toured here with John Garcia. Which was a bit of an honour. But mostly we’ve been slacking off.
And Pete bought a new motorbike.

What motivates you to make music?
Bones: Large women. Boredom. Punching each other. Pleasing Satan.
Cuz: Jim Beam and BBQ Shapes.

What have been the high and low points of your musical experiences so far?
Bones: Not losing Mikey on our recent Europe tour was a major achievement. He lost all his clothes somewhere, but not himself, amazing! Cuz lost his virginity again.
Cuz: Our first show in Hamburg — to our surprise we sold the venue out.
It’s nice knowing that we have a shitload of fans in Germany. We are like David Hasselhoff.
Bones: True, that tour was a highlight, we played some great venues and cities to fans we didn’t know we had. Also, having our first EP and albums re-released in Europe and the USA etc was grouse too. We’re stoked it’s all on vinyl now.
As for lows? Lows are fuel for our material.
Running out of beer also sucks balls.

What music are you listening to at the moment?
Bones: Voodoo folk songs. Mother’s Finest. Rod Stewart. Crunt.
Cuz: Motorhead, Fleetwood Mac, Megadeth, Maiden. All the good stuff.

If you were stranded on a desert island, which member of the band would get eaten first?
Bones: I’d eat my own head, since I quit smoking it’s pretty fat. So my head would get eaten first. Then I’d eat all the other cunts in the band.
Cuz: I’d eat Bones. Coz I think he’d taste like BBQ Shapes and beer.

Here’s an opportunity to bitch about something, whether music related or not. What really pisses you off?
Bones: We harbour so much hate! Especially for unicorns! Always dropping their candy coated eyelashes like cigarette butts everywhere, and farting rainbows.
Also being asked to help build studios shits us a fair bit.
Cuz: iPhones at gigs. People, just enjoy the fact you’re at a gig! Leave the phone at home.

You’re putting together your perfect gig featuring Australian artists. Who would you get to play and where? Feel free to include acts/DJs/bands/venues that no longer exist.
Bones: It’d be between Cherry Bar, or a place we hang out up at the Black Spur, or Cuz’s dilapidated mental asylum.
Cuz: It’d be in the Black Spur Forest. A heap of panel vans parked in a big circle, with headlights on full beam!
Bones: In random order… we’d have these reprobates on the bill:
Radio Birdman
Collette
Lubricated Goat
Six Ft Hick
Jackson Firebird
The Black List
God
Cuz: Yeah… plus Rose Tattoo and us.

Mammoth Mammoth join Hotel Wrecking City Traders in support of Sleep on Sunday December 7th at The Corner Hotel. Tickets on sale now through lifeisnoise.com.

Anger Management: Ne Obliviscaris

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2014

Every fortnight, we check in with all things heavy on RTRFM’s Critical Mass show.

Big things are happening right now for Melbourne’s Ne Obliviscaris [Nay Ob-li-vis-kar-is], and bigger things are yet to come. The band has just released their second album Citadel — the follow-up to 2012’s Portal of I – and at the time of writing are in the midst of an Australian tour.

Musically similar to their debut, Citadel is comprised of lengthy tracks blending extreme with melodic metal to create an album that is powerfully progressive in the best possible way. The musicianship on display is platinum-class, as can be seen by the transitions from the haunting violin to the lightning fast riffing and blasting segments.

Although it’s difficult to pick a standout track, ‘Devour Me, Colossus (Part I): Blackholes’ showcases some spine-chilling moments, especially from the 9-minute mark with a bass solo that slowly builds with some fast riffing, then drums, then violin to the guitar solo and finally the big payoff finale.

Prior to the release of the new album, the band also smashed the crowd-funding record for an Australian band, raising $86,132 in a pledge for a world tour – surpassing the target within 38 hours. They have since been confirmed for France’s Hellfest in 2015, sharing the stage with some of the world’s finest hard rock/heavy metal bands past and present – and deservedly so.

For fans of: Leprous, Cynic, Enslaved, Opeth, Insomnium.

Critical Mass airs every Wednesday from 9PM (GMT+8) on RTR FM 92.1 in Perth, Australia.

Craig’s List: Mind Against

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014

Every fortnight, RTRFM’s Craig Hollywood brings us a little taste of what to expect from Tuesday’s Full Frequency…

Once again Mind Against bring their signature sound to Life and Death as they explore territory that is somehow both familiar and fresh at the same time. With two tracks of emotional techno that traverse a dynamic sonic landscape, both Strange Days and Polarstern could easily captivate a small room or command a small army with ease.

Bringing an understated counterpoint to the EP is Recondite’s subtle yet rich sounding take on Strange Days as he reworks it into a soft and sexy trip that seems to take you on a journey outwards and inwards — all while standing still in that place where words have no meaning. A well-crafted remix of the highest order.

The Strange Days EP will be available for purchase on the 15th of December 2014.

Full Frequency with Craig Hollywood airs every Tuesday at 3PM (GMT+8) on RTRFM 92.1 in Perth, Australia.

Two Minutes With Horsehunter

Monday, December 1st, 2014

We spend a couple of minutes with Michael Harutyunyan of Horsehunter ahead of their support slot for Sleep on Saturday December 6 at The Corner and find out what’s new…

What’s going on in the world of Horsehunter?
Very exciting stuff. We’ll be doing a physical release of our debut album through a great US label, we’ve been writing a lot of new material (so much heavier) for some upcoming releases, and a lot of other stuff that we can’t really talk about yet.

What motivates you to make music?
This is difficult to answer — if we weren’t making music I wouldn’t bother with life. We’re all a bunch of losers who just want to play really fucking loud.

What have been the high and low points of your musical experiences so far?
High points: We all agree that playing with High On Fire was by far the greatest thing to happen to our band, that experience was surreal. This past year in general has been the most unbelievable year for us, we couldn’t have ever expected all of the international support slots, the Cherry Bar residency, playing at much bigger venues, and having such an incredible response to our debut album. Working with Tigran Fuzzmeister on the album was also a great and very memorable experience.

Low points:
Getting stupidly drunk and stoned before our first ever gig at Cherry Bar (in early 2013). That was the loosest set we’ve ever played, we were so out of tune and sloppy. That was the first proper show that people in the local doom scene actually came to check out too, so it’s funny to think that we made such a terrible first impression. We learned our lesson — no more than a pint before a show, and one SHARED two paper. Definitely no acid.

What music are you listening to at the moment?
Mainly a lot of Watchtower. Their upcoming record is just incredible. But to be honest I haven’t been listening to much music other than Whitehorse, Death Grips, Internal Rot, Sabbath and other classics. Dan’s been listening to heaps of death/grind/black metal — Immolation, Portal, Dismember, Repulsion, etc. Himi’s just listening to Bob Dylan as always with a bit of True Widow here and there, and Nick exclusively listens to ISIS.

If you were stranded on a desert island, which member of the band would get eaten first?
Probably Nick. He’s the biggest and most nutritious member of the band. Realistically I could also be eaten, Himi too, Dan is inedible though coz he’s too nihilistic and he’d probably taste bland.

Here’s an opportunity to bitch about something, whether music related or not. What really pisses you off?
People who buy their records at JB Hi-Fi or other big franchises. Don’t get me wrong, I have a good friend who manages a JB a bit far out of town and I’m cool with that, but I still strongly feel that if you’re going to bother stepping outside of your house to buy vinyl, buy it from an independent record store. If it weren’t for the personal touch and diverse music taste of the owners of places like The Missing Link, Heartland, and countless others, then we’ll see more stores like Ritual fade away (R.I.P.). I discovered everything from Electric Wizard, to Thou, to Tom Waits, to Chelsea Wolfe, heaps of bands from the local scene, and so many others that have shaped my understanding of music today, from having good conversations with guys like Nick and Christof from the Missing Link, and having them point me in the right direction. Jackson from Ritual was also a legend and introduced me to heaps of heavier and darker music. Support that shit or Cash Money records will win.

You’re putting together your perfect gig featuring Australian artists. Who would you get to play and where? Feel free to include acts/DJs/bands/venues that no longer exist.
Whitehorse, Watchtower, Internal Rot, Drowning Horse, Hydromedusa, Space Bong, Violent Gorge (are they Australian? The lead singer is a nut), Lubricated Goat, TTTDC, Willow Darling, Elbrus, Buffalo, Wicked City, Child, Frown, and uuuh let’s chuck in INXS for a laugh. Oh and The Dan Harris Explosion, inarguably the greatest band of all time. You’ve probably never heard of them. Cram it all into The Tote.

Horsehunter join Bonnie Mercer in support of Sleep on Saturday December 6 at The Corner Hotel in Melbourne. Tickets for that show are sold out, but Sleep’s second Melbourne show and the rest of the tour are on sale now through lifeisnoise.com.
