Craig’s List: Mind Against

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014

Every fortnight, RTRFM’s Craig Hollywood brings us a little taste of what to expect from Tuesday’s Full Frequency…

Once again Mind Against bring their signature sound to Life and Death as they explore territory that is somehow both familiar and fresh at the same time. With two tracks of emotional techno that traverse a dynamic sonic landscape, both Strange Days and Polarstern could easily captivate a small room or command a small army with ease.

Bringing an understated counterpoint to the EP is Recondite’s subtle yet rich sounding take on Strange Days as he reworks it into a soft and sexy trip that seems to take you on a journey outwards and inwards — all while standing still in that place where words have no meaning. A well-crafted remix of the highest order.

The Strange Days EP will be available for purchase on the 15th of December 2014.

Full Frequency with Craig Hollywood airs every Tuesday at 3PM (GMT+8) on RTRFM 92.1 in Perth, Australia.

James Blake debuts new track + Gorillaz remix

Friday, November 28th, 2014

As we eagerly await a new album from UK electronic producer James Blake, he’s just previewed a track called ‘200 Press’. It’s deceivingly deep and house-y sounding cut until the breakbeats kick in, the rapping gets more gritty and things turn discordantly weird.

But you’ll have to wait until December 8 to wrap your ears around the whole thing, which will be available digitally and on vinyl via Blake’s 1–800-Dinosaur imprint. Note: as the track title reveals, they’re apparently only pressing 200 copies. Collectors item already?

In other James Blake news, an unheard remix of Gorillaz’ ‘Feel Good Inc.’ under his Harmonimix pseudonym has popped up on the FABRICLIVE x Hit & Run Mix by Rich Reason, who states the remix is “from back in the day”.

Blake’s third album will apparently be released in April 2015 and may or may not include collaborations with Kanye West and Justin Vernon from Bon Iver.

Craig’s List: Sterac

Tuesday, November 18th, 2014

Every fortnight, RTRFM’s Craig Hollywood brings us a little taste of what to expect from Tuesday’s Full Frequency…

After a blistering return on a recent Klockworks EP, Dutch techno practitioner Steve Rachmad aka Sterac is back with a cracking new track for Delsin. Originally released on a limited white label run earlier in summer, it now comes backed with remixes by Fachwerk’s Mike Dehnert, VRIL and US twosome Anthony Parasole & Phil Moffa, as well as with some typically textural and boutique artwork by the excellent Boris Tellegen.

The original track is a stripped back bit of dub, deep, rolling techno with icy percussion and subtle synths working to take over your mind and body alike. German Dystopian cohort VRIL, who has also appeared on this label before, turns in a dub mix that is more urgent and is fleshed out with even more dub synths and stern kicks. It’s supple and minimal but will certainly turn plenty of heads in the right club space. New Yorkers Anthony Parasole and Phil Moffa from the The Corner label then remix the track into something with paranoid synth loops, pounding drums and urgent, rave infections the longer it roll on. Finally, the one and only Mike Dehnert repackages the track as a swimming, funky bit of heavyweight techno. His weird hooks, coarse percussion and intense hats make it the most arresting and urgent of the lot.

This release is seriously streamlined, groove driven techno from a group of modern masters, and will be available on 8 December through Delsin.

Starting as an imprint solely for Perc’s own productions, Perc Trax has grown in recognition and confidence each year since its first release in 2004. A Minute With Lower Spectrum

Monday, November 3rd, 2014

We spend a minute with Lower Spectrum before he kicks off RTRFM’s Courtyard Club series this Friday and find out what’s new…

Describe your music in five words or less.
Raw, honest and deep.

What’s going on in the world of Lower Spectrum?
Remixes, live shows, contracts, hustling and working on a new release.

What motivates you to make music?
Friends, different environments, time, limitations and making something from nothing.

What have been the high and low points of your musical experiences so far?
Highs: Being given the opportunities to play with and support acts I look up to like Andy Stott, Jon Hopkins, Nightmares On Wax, Tim Shiel, Pantha Du Prince, Colin Stetson…

Lows: Having my laptop bounce off stage during my show at BIGSOUND in Brisbane….

What music are you listening to at the moment?
A lot of gospel music– Marion Williams, The Wright Specials and Mo Town

If you were stranded on a desert island, which member of the band would get eaten first?
It would have to be my manager, because there is only me in the band and that could be his cut.

Here’s an opportunity to bitch about something, whether music related or not. What really pisses you off?
The end bits of bananas. That little sneaky stalky bit that is disguised in the bottom of the banana. Gets me every time. What’s with that?

You’re putting together your perfect gig featuring Australian artists. Who would you get to play and where? Feel free to include acts/DJs/bands/venues that no longer exist.
I would make it at the little secret Booyembarra Park auditorium in Fremantle and have a mix of acts like D.D Dumbo, Cosmo Gets, Lewis Cancut, Seekae, Because Of Ghosts, Dizz1, Qua, etc.

Lower Spectrum plays the first of RTRFM’s free 8-week gig series Courtyard Club this Friday November 7 with DJ Craig Hollywood at the State Theatre Courtyard. Head over to the RTRFM website for more details.

Craig’s List: Ike Release

Tuesday, October 21st, 2014

Every fortnight, RTRFM’s Craig Hollywood will bring us a little taste of what to expect from Tuesday’s Full Frequency…

MOS Recordings presents its next album project, namely a debut solo full length from Chicago’s Ike Release, which has been aptly titled Noir. Ike is an accomplished solo producer as well as being one half of acclaimed duo Innerspace Halflife with Hakim Murphy and has a long and fruitful relationship with MOS Recordings.

Across ten tracks, Ike unleashes his array of machines (Microkorgs, a machinedrum, MPCs, iPad Apps, cracked soft synths, borrowed Nord Leads, field recordings) and explores deep, textural house, ramshackle percussive grooves, the darkest corners of the galaxy and lots more besides. Opener ‘Lost Cities’ is an underwater rhythm with gloopy synths and stiff drum hits that eases you into the ride. From there, there’s the raw, deep jack of ‘Precipiate’ with its soft acid line, the disheveled house of ‘Vapor’ and the gluey synth layers and dreamy pads of ‘Solace’.

Check the link for an exclusive listen to ‘Vapor’, which is one of the stand out inclusions from the album.

Noir will be released on MOS Recordings on November 17.

Craig’s List: Stillhead

Tuesday, October 7th, 2014

Every fortnight, RTRFM’s Craig Hollywood will bring us a little taste of what to expect from Tuesday’s Full Frequency…

Deep, electronic music. The hazy, blurred overlap between techno and ambient, the dubbed out fringes of house and melancholy bass or the closing gap which separates d&b from dub-techno, it’s all within our Brightest Dark Place. A state of mind. A gut feeling. A reactionary state. Everyone has their own Brightest Dark Place. Join UK artist Stillhead in his.

It has been a year of change for Alex Cowles. After retiring his DFRNT alias, alongside his Echodub label, he has made a fresh start with something new. Working under the alias Stillhead, he has launched a new label: Brightest Dark Place, and arriving with it, the Dwelling EP.

This is a must for any fan of ambient, dub techno or all round high grade electronica.

The Dwelling EP will be release on Brightest Dark Place on December 1.

Craig’s List: Paula Temple

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014

Every fortnight, RTRFM’s Craig Hollywood will bring us a little taste of what to expect from Tuesday’s Full Frequency…

Paula Temple returns to R&S with her second release Deathvox EP, featuring three tracks as exciting and daring as her superb debut Colonized EP.

‘Deathvox’ is a club shaking, wild and imaginative tour de force, featuring her voice transformed like nothing on earth. ‘Monstro’ presents a half-speed techno industrial explosion fitting for a Nine Inch Nails mosh pit. ‘Ful’ completes the epic journey with synth melodic richness you might expect from Karen Gwyer or Nathan Fake.

Deathvox EP is the work of an inspired mind, citing her recent move to Berlin and working with progressive artists on her label Noise Manifesto as major influences on the craft of this record. Bringing together her love of post-punk, industrial noise and synthesizers, Paula Temple broadens her scope of the techno spectrum and sets her own mark yet again in this uncompromising release.

Deathvox will be released on Belgium’s R&S Records on October 27.

Craig’s List: Kwartz

Tuesday, September 9th, 2014

Every fortnight, RTRFM’s Craig Hollywood will bring us a little taste of what to expect from Tuesday’s Full Frequency…

After his debut on Pole Group last year with the track ‘Hate’ selected for the compilation release Unknown Landscapes — EP 1, Kwartz makes a return to the label with Form and Void EP. Hailing from Madrid, DJ and producer Kwartz started his career in 2011 and within a fairly short time has developed and refined his own hypnotic, dark and enveloping techno. Amongst notable releases to date is his first vinyl EP Fenomen, a joint release with Pole Group artist Exium on their Nheoma imprint.

Form and Void EP features two strong originals and two equally powerful remix supports from the label mates and core members of Pole Group, Reeko and Exium. The title track ‘Form and Void’ kicks off with straight forward 4/4 rhythmic groove that gradually builds up layer by layer in to the darker shade to meet the mysterious break, followed by heavy brooding bass tones slashing through the kick drums, deepening the atmosphere with the hollowing echoes. Reeko’s remix elevates the dark mood of original while pumping in even more energy with rolling kick/hat combo and psychedelic swirling chaos of synth that intensifies throughout the entire length of the track.

Form & Void EP will be released on Pole Group on 15 September.

Full Frequency with Craig Hollywood airs every Tuesday from 3PM on RTRFM.
